A mobile crane toppled and crushed an apartment block's ground-floor balconies Nov. 27 after a drunken driver hit a Zhiguli parked by the side of the road, police reported. The blow at 64 Krasnovo Znameni Avenue was so strong, the dwellers thought it was an earthquake. Nobody was injured, but police are pressing criminal charges against driver Alexander Kalashnikov, 42. Police detained the driver but abandoned the Ivanovets crane, and residents called for days asking officials to take the crane away. The crane itself has become the target of vandalism. On Monday, children set it on fire with a blowtorch and burned the window frames of the apartments on the first and second floors. The firemen arrived quickly and contained the blaze before it spread inside. The next day, the charred crane was taken away. Kalashnikov will be deprived of his licence and will have to cover the people's losses, police say.
