BUSINESS BRIEFS

Entrepreneurs, apparatchiki party down
Officials overseeing business at the Vladivostok and Primorye regional administrations invited entrepreneurs to mingle at a nightclub to promote mutual understanding. A ticket to the event on December 23 at the club Nautilus will cost 500 rubles ($18.70), but the report did not say if the officials will have to pay. The night of informal talks was organized by the committee for economy and planning of the Vladivostok City administration and Primorye regional fund for support of small businesses.

Logging road protested
Committee to protect environment in Primorye's northern Pozharsky County protested at the construction of a road along the Svetlaya River planned by timber company Primorsklesprom. The road would destroy ecology of the river's basin, said Yury Trush, a local inspector with the region's ecological department. Builders would have to cut old-growth timber, baring the banks which are home to rare species. Logging in the area was prohibited in 1991.

Europe dumps meat in Primorye
The Primorye meat market this year was captured by European suppliers, with their market share rising to 70 percent. Volumes of meat shipments from traditional competitors in the United States and New Zealand have been halved. During the ruble crisis in Russia last year, European governments helped their suppliers to win over the market by increasing subsidies, which made European meat much cheaper after domestic prices for imported products quadrupled. Primorye is flooded with meat from France, England, Austria, Ireland and other countries on the other end of the continent, so mad cow scandals now could affect this region too, a news report said.
