| Visitors to our city learn quickly that the world's oldest profession is adapting to capitalism quite nicely. Modern brothels advertise in most newspapers, with photos featuring open-mouthed blondes and brunettes looking longingly (or predatorily) at the camera. And foreign men who visit Vladivostok bars and casinos often wonder whether they suddenly became five times more attractive the minute their feet touched down on Primorye soil. |

| Every week, it seems, the calendar at the Sukhanov House Museum is packed. For those suffering from depression over the sudden bad weather in mid-August, there's a psychologist. Those anxious about their appearance and what the future holds can meet both a beautician and an astrologer. There are amateur plays, collections of metal and glass, and exhibits of art students' work. |

| A recent conference on attracting investment came up with some ideas that Primorye companies and foreign firms should listen to. If the krai wants to attract further investment, attendants were told, companies must train employees, better disclose information to stockholders, and clarify the region's tumultuous legal environment. |

| Fill those water jugs
Vladivostok residents can say good-bye to their hot water once more – and hoarding cold water may not be a bad idea. The mayor's office announced it will turn off hot water in the city because the municipal reservoirs are running dry due to a summer-long drought. City Hall says two typhoons would not be enough to correct the problem fully. Cold water will be decreased to only a few hours a day if it doesn't rain by August 22. |
