Arts and Ideas Music soars despite shabby stage

Lenin’s bas-relief head peeked out from the dented metal frieze above the stage, and dried glue shone from where it had dripped from lanterns on the chipped walls. But the music – despite a few slips by the soloists – was no less enchanting at the opening of the Philharmonic Society’s 1997-98 season. The Sept. 30 concert brought out a standing-room-only crowd, who were so captivated by the players’ enthusiastic playing they didn’t seem to notice the stage’s warped wooden floorboards.
