Cosmo may cause riots

by Nonna Chernyakova

“Men will follow your voice!” “Erotic dreams: What do they mean?” “The state duma should pass a law that forces all married men to wear their wedding rings.”

These are the main topics of the October issue of Cosmopolitan, available in Vladiovostok’s press stands. Many women will be unable to ignore it: Claudia Schiffer in yellow overalls on the cover draws them as a sugar cube attracts bees.

Every woman wants to be beautiful. Even if she says she just dresses up because she feels good when she looks good, the goal is to attract men. If this desire sleeps quietly inside her, it is safer for society. But the growing number of beauty magazines, both foreign and Russian (Elle, Liza, Nataly, Boutique and others), fan the flames, making women strive to look like models.

Imagine a woman who follows Cosmo’s advice. She washes her body with the gentle soap Savon De Paradis. Then she applies Winter Fairy makeup from Givenchy, Rouge Couture lipstick’s Rose Organza No. 317, and the new perfume from Paris, Madeleine Vionet. Then she studies this season’s fashions and buys a new outfit. Next comes advice on the health page. “Kiss as often as possible; it helps you fight tooth decay, relax, lose weight, keep yourself in good shape, and understand whether he is good for you.”

OK, where is he? The lioness, with her new look, goes out. First of all, she smells unwashed sweaty bodies. She hears beer glugging down the throat, and a belch. And colorful Russian swear words. Does he look like Tom Cruise? No. Guys love to quote the Russian aphorism: “A man should be only a little bit handsomer than an ape.”

Do the guys realize what a woman might do if she’s disappointed? I have an image of a crowd of women clad in fashionable outfits running through the streets of Vladivostok armed with rolled-up posters of Claudia Schiffer, knocking down men and breaking the windows of boutiques. Shouldn’t it be top priority for the governor and mayor to prohibit magazines sales in a city in which there are no Hollywood stars?
