Cop killing sparks searches

by Nick Wadhams

Gunmen shot and killed a police officer while he walked his dog at midnight Oct 22. No attackers have been found, though police know two license plate numbers of the escape vehicle, local press reported.

After 12 a.m. Wednesday morning, residents on the Tungusskaya Street heard shots followed by the sounds of a fleeing vehicle. When police arrived, they had to kill the fallen officer’s Rotweiler, which attacked anyone who came near the body.

The following day, police launched Operation Siren to search for the escape vehicle. Vladivostok streets were covered with officers throughout the day, stopping drivers and checking documentation. No suspects in the killing were found.

The slain officer was a major in the Seventh Division of the Krai Internal Affairs Department, a secretive group that conducts investigations and surveillance on city police workers.
