Arts and Ideas Gulag exhibit stirs sorrow

The title of the exhibition “Imyarek” (So-and-so) – an old Russian word for a person devoid his name — itself makes you feel sad for the millions killed by the Soviet regime, and rage against those which did it.

When I went to the hospital on a whim to interview Vladivostok’s mayor, who’d recently fallen ill after a court appearance, I expected hospital defenses to be impenetrable. After all, Victor Cherepkov is a man who lives in fear of his own assassination at the hands of arch-enemies in the krai government.

Opinion Descendants of Vladivostok residents make new friends

We attended a conference Sept. 24-26 concerning Russian compatriots from the Pacific Rim countries. Participants were descendants of those who had lived in Vladivostok but had to leave the country after the Revolution. I am a retired educator who lives in the United States whose family left Vladivostok.

Opinion Ain`t no way to treat a lady

During a recent visit to Vladivostok I found a copy of your newspaper in the lobby of my hotel. The front page story was about the killing of a mob boss, and was not encouraging. However, once I worked my way to the last page and found Nonna Chernyakova’s column on Russian women who read Cosmo ("We Love It, Really," Oct. 16), I found myself drawn to a keyboard to comment.

While hundreds of dispirited demonstrators – many of them Communists and their allies – marched in Vladivostok, we commemorated the Revolution in a quieter way. We went camping in the Sikhote-Alin with a group of friends.

Bigwigs visit Japan A group of Primorye manufacturers led by Vice Gov. Igor Belchuk recently traveled to the Hokkaido prefecture in Japan, where they participated in an exhibition of Primorye-made goods. Japanese investors at the exhibition were most interested in partnerships with the Mink fur company, Dikona pharmaceuticals, the Fabrika Zarya clothing factory, and fishing giant Dalmoreprodukt.

Governor finds cash to pay Vladivostok doctors Gov. Yevgeny Nazdratenko recently allocated 10 billion rubles to pay Vladivostok doctors. The money will be taken from federal funds earmarked for the krai that came through Nov. 3. Physicians from 15 children and four maternity hospitals, as well as several other medical institutions, will receive salaries thanks to the newly arrived funds.
