| If shoe repair shops and fashion houses started cheerfully welcoming Russian housewives, we would think something went wrong in our nation. Seeing a smiling girl at a counter is as rare as an elephant sitting in a tree in downtown Vladivostok. I think part of our tradition is to look gloomier than we are, in order to scare customers, so that they feel guilty and regret they even came. |

| The concept of a play within a play is hardly new, dating back at least to Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, and until we saw the Gorky Drama Theater’s “Mafiosi”, we had never considered the inherent risks in such a production. |

| In 1955, during Khruschev's thaw, an 80-year-old Vladivostok woman wrote a letter. Eighteen years ago, the NKVD arrested her daughter, who was never heard from again. These three documents released by the Federal Security Bureau tell a story of a conviction rammed through by the secret police, and of a dark retribution that befell the investigator as the Soviet maw began devouring its own. |

Ida Popova still remembers the way the morning began – Sept. 11, 1937. It was sunny, a golden autumn day in Primorye. On her way out the door to school, she kissed her father good-bye, as she did every day. |

| Hi, my name is Scott Cook, and I live in Australia, where I was born. I have no Russian relatives, but plenty of Russian friends whom I have contacted over the years through their service on the ships of FESCO. These times have been great fun, with trips to 10-pin bowling, mini golf, parties aboard the ships, and just being friends. |

| I previously submitted a brief statement concerning the ironically named new religious law "On Freedom of Conscious and On Religious Associations." At that time, I said, "I guess it just goes to show you can take the boys out of communism, but you can’t take communism out of the boys." Now that I have stirred up the hornets’ nest so to speak, I should like to offer commentary on the words I wrote and their relation to the new law. |

| The pathetic power struggles which hold the citizens of Vladivostok hostage have got to stop! How long can the people allow those darn politicians to play with power for the sole benefit of their own? They are all corrupt and compromised by close ties to mafia. Every politician onstage so far has proven his impotence in serving his electorate. |

| The Primorye Duma is scheduled to hold an election Dec. 7, and it’s time for Vladivostok and Primorye voters to rouse themselves and head to the polls.
Last election, apathy left Primorye with a Duma that some, anyway, may regret. Although voters did reject Mayor Victor Cherepkov’s bid for a seat, there was little else decisive about the vote. Some voters leaving the polls told reporters they couldn’t remember whom they voted for. One man turned out just because he wanted to see his old school, where the voting was taking place. |

| TV crew arrested in Khasan
A Japanese TV camera crew was arrested near Khasan on Nov. 14. Local press reported that nine Japanese journalists from NHK TV and their Russian translators were in Khasan to shoot a live TV program. During the shoot they were asked for documents by Russian frontier guards, who discovered that the crew’s visas didn’t permit them to visit Khasan. Guards decided to arrest the crew but released them the next day. A spokesman for the Vladivostok office of NHK said that documentation was in order, and the crew had obtained permission to shoot the program in Khasan. |
