November 27, 1997Crime ChronicleTV crew arrested in KhasanA Japanese TV camera crew was arrested near Khasan on Nov. 14. Local press reported that nine Japanese journalists from NHK TV and their Russian translators were in Khasan to shoot a live TV program. During the shoot they were asked for documents by Russian frontier guards, who discovered that the crew’s visas didn’t permit them to visit Khasan. Guards decided to arrest the crew but released them the next day. A spokesman for the Vladivostok office of NHK said that documentation was in order, and the crew had obtained permission to shoot the program in Khasan. Bomb threat scares Artyom kidsChildren and staff at an Artyom boarding school were evacuated on Nov. 18 after an anonymous caller said the building would blow up at 5 p.m. Bomb experts from the local military unit searched for explosives but found nothing. An investigation is underway. Nakhodka TNT stolenThirty kilograms of dynamite and 150 detonators were stolen from a military unit located near Nakhodka recently. In a subsequent investigation, two students from a nearby technical college were arrested, for possession of 109 blast caps and detonators. The two suspects said they found the explosives near Ritsa Lake. Investigators will now try to link the seized devices to equipment stolen from the military base.
