In 1955, during Khruschev's thaw, an 80-year-old Vladivostok woman wrote a letter. Eighteen years ago, the NKVD arrested her daughter, who was never heard from again. These three documents released by the Federal Security Bureau tell a story of a conviction rammed through by the secret police, and of a dark retribution that befell the investigator as the Soviet maw began devouring its own.

Kondratov awarded for FSB management skills President Yeltsin recently awarded local presidential representative and Lt. Gen. Victor Kondratov the Order of Fighting Merit for managing a highly successful FSB operation in the Far East, according to federal officials. Kondratov also earned kudos in 1995, when Yeltsin named the Primorye FSB one of the best in the country.

Alexander Lebed, leader of the People's Republican party and "Honor and Motherland" movement paid a one day visit to Vladivostok Dec. 1 to promote his party's candidates for upcoming krai Duma elections. Though Lebed has gradually lost influence in Russian political circles and possesses no official rank except as party leader, he was cordially met by the first vice governor Konstantin Tolstoshein and stayed at the four-star Hyundai hotel.
