Opinion So why are we here?

I have had occasion to call the States three times since I got back to Vladivostok Dec. 27 — to tell my family I had arrived, to wish everyone happy New Year, and to report I’d forgotten some clothes in my hasty packing job — and every time someone has asked urgently, “Are you all right?”

The environmentalists around the world are trying to save the endangered Siberian tiger, which has dwindled to only a few hundred cats in the wild. But it only takes the presence of a man-eater, such as the one that appeared last month near the village of Sobolinoye, to bring to the surface the divisions between those who wish to preserve the animal and those who live near it.

Prosecutor investigates freezing apartments The krai prosecutor has launched a criminal case against two companies that have failed to provide heat to residents of six apartment blocks on Krygina Street since October. Prosecutor Valery Vasilenko is charging AESCO and PZHRET with negligence after residents complained they hadn’t had heat or hot and cold water for months. No other officials had responded to repeated appeals by the freezing people.
