March 16, 1998Crime ChronicleBusinessman slain in UssuriskThe general director of the Tor company, Mikhail Kim, was slain in Ussurisk Feb. 21, the first ever homicide of a businessman in the city. According to police, two men shot Kim twice in the head as he left his house. No arrests have been made yet. Kim’s company sold vegetables and fruit imported from China. Assailant claims insanity in stabbing of familyA 22-year old Vladivostok man stabbed his younger brother and mother to death on Feb. 22, claiming that American Indian spirits had possessed him to commit the murder. According to police, Andrei D. (whose last name was withheld by police) stabbed his brother, 18-year-old Yevgeny, four times and his mother Tatiana six, at the family’ apartment on Okeansky Avenue. Neighbors of the family reported that after his father died and Yevgeny became handicapped a year ago, Andrei would often argue with his relatives. Andrei, a graduate of Far Eastern State Technical University, is now in jail, claiming insanity. Masked gunmen steal $31,000 from apartmentTwo masked gunman burglarized a Nikiforova Street apartment of $31,000 on March 2. Apparently, the thieves were aware of the money ahead of time, as they found it and immediately left the scene, in fewer than 30 minutes, according to the apartment owner. No arrests have been made and an investigation is underway, police said. Deckhouse burns on Nakhodka cargo shipTwo decks and a deckhouse burned down on a cargo ship moored at Nakhodka’s Far Eastern Ship Engineering Plant on Feb. 22. The fire, which started in the engine compartment while the ship was waiting for cargo, took nine hours to extinguish. The ship, Pine King Belize, has a Russian crew and flies the flag of Belize.
