Anna Schetinina made history in 1935. At the age of 27, she became the first woman to captain a long-voyage ship.

Last week local dignitaries, plus sailors and fishermen from around Primorye and the world gathered at the Seamen’s Palace of Culture to honor Captain Anna on her 90th birthday.

Although long-retired, Schetinina’s legacy lives on. As a former senior lecturer at the Marine Academy, and a captain who was always willing to take on trainees, Schetinina’s former students can still be found on almost every Russian ship in the Far East.

Schetinina’s influence was felt on land as well; she was the founder of Vladivostok’s fishing port, in 1938.
