| FESCO launches largest-ever container ship
FESCO launched its largest-ever container ship late February, The Kapitan Afanasiev. Built in Poland, the ship can take 1,900, 20-foot containers and travel at a maximum speed of 19 knots. On her way to Primorye, the ship will pick up cargo in Puerto Rico to deliver it to China and then operate on the Pusan-Inchon-Vostochny-Vladivostok line. |

| Police arrest notorious Primorye don
Vladivostok police arrested the alleged leader of a Primorye criminal group on March 6, newspapers reported. Pavel Samoylenko, 35, was indicted on a number of extortion charges reportedly committed in 1995 and 1996. Samoylenko’s gang allegedly kidnapped businessmen from around the krai, brought them to Vladivostok, and tortured them or locked them in building basements and freezers. Samoylenko may face up to 12 years in prison. |

| Spring means tick season
Tick-born encephalitis season started March 15. Several bites have been recorded in Vladivostok and Nadezhdinsky County already this year. Those who got tick shots last fall must undergo revaccination. Those who have not been vaccinated before may get them on an accelerated course at any local polyclinic. Last season, 147 people contracted encephalitis, 82 percent of whom were not immunized. Twenty of those who became infected died from the disease. |
