Intestinal infection breaks out in boarding school

Combined reports

Vladivostok’s Sovetsky Prosecutor Office has launched a criminal case regarding violations of sanitary and epidemiological norms which resulted in a mass outbreak of intestinal infection in a boarding school camp, the statement from the office reported.

The outbreak occurred at the summer camp of the Vladivostok-based regional boarding school for gifted children, with 30 children and teenagers taken to a city hospital on July 21 with symptoms of an intestinal infection.

As of Monday, the number of hospitalized increased to 52, including 46 children and six members of the school’s staff, Prima Media said.

The condition of those hospitalized is being reported as satisfactory, Ria Novosti said citing Vladivostok’s Department of Health.

The Prosecutor’s Office is performing a preliminary investigation into the case, the statement from the office reported.

The exact cause of the outbreak is yet to be determined, the statement said. A group of epidemiologists is currently researching the culprit that led to the infection.

The boarding school-based summer camp typically has over 120 children and teenagers staying for summer recreation.

This has been the sixth case launched in Primorye this year for violations of sanitary and epidemiological norms, with the previous intestinal outbreaks caused by spoiled food.
