Foreign tourist disappears in Kamchatka waters

Combined reports

A helicopter and a rescue team resumed searching for a German tourist who went missing during a white water rafting trip on the Opala River in Kamchatka, emergency officials said.

The tourist was lost on Monday when the two visitors, who arrived from Germany, were rafting on the river in Kamchatka’s Ust-Bolsheretsky County. The boat turned over in the raging rapids due to a strong current. The first tourist was rescued by nearby people while the second went missing.

The emergency department did not receive information about the incident until Wednesday, Ria Novosti news agency reported on Thursday citing officials from the region’s Department for Emergency Situations.

According to them, the tourists had not informed the department of their trip as required and were traveling without a guide.

The rescued traveler has been taken to the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the news agency said.
