Bears encroach Magadan

A police patrol was forced to discharge a gun into the air to drive away a wild bear which appeared in the village of Sokol in the Magadan region, Sunday.

The bear appeared at night in Sokol, a small village 56 kilometers from the city of Magadan, and was scared away by a patrol which was called by the village residents. No traces of the animal’s wounds were found.

According to This summer hunting experts have registered more cases of wild bears appearing in the region’s villages, news reports cited Andrei Pankin, Vice Head of the Hunting Inspectorate of Russia’s Agricultural Inspectorate, as saying.

“The animals approach villages and settlements trying to find food since this year’s yield of berries and fish is very scarce,” Pankin commented to Ria Novosti news agency.
