Russian director Nikolai Karandashov cheerfully holds awards for his movie ‘Strannik’ (The Wanderer), which won the Grand Prize at the fourth International Pacific Meridian International Film Festival. The movie, which is Karandashov’s debut in major cinema, was also recognized with the special award of Primorye’s Governor Sergei Darkin. The festival bid farewell to Vladivostok on Thursday.

Crime watch Crimes up in Far East region

The Russian Far East district holds the highest crime level compared to other federal districts showing a 35 percent increase in the first seven months of 2006 compared to 16.8 percent growth in other Russia’s districts over the same period, presidential envoy to the district Kamil Iskhakov reported on Thursday, opening the meeting of the regional law enforcment in Khabarovsk.

Musicians from the American Harlem Blues and Jazz Band, guests of the fourth International Pacific Meridian Film Festival, are arriving on the red carpet during the festival’s opening ceremony in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok on August 25. The seven-day festival attracted many visitors as well as Russian and foreign cinema professionals. The festival is screening 125 films of various genres from 21 countries, such as Australia, S. Business Russian fish stakes on secondary processing

Unwise fish resources exploitation should not be used as a means to push ahead the country’s economy. Fish catches should not be increased but processing of seafood products should be developed, Primorye’s Governor formulated as the main focus of the two-day international fishery forum in Vladivostok when addressing the participants on August 24.

U.S. Ambassador to Russia William Burns conveys his empathy and support to a Russian invalid Alexander Kashin during Saturday’s picket at the building of the US Consulate General staged by ‘Nasha Strana’(Our Country) youth organization. Kashin was partially paralyzed in a 1998 car accident involving former U.S. Consul General to the Russian Far East Douglas Kent, and since then has been unsuccessfully attempting to sue Kent in U.S. courts for financial liability.

Showing concern to the fate of Alexander Kashin, U.S. Ambassador to Russia William Burns expressed his personal sympathies over ‘the sad incident’ and promised to forward an official request to the US State Department on Kashin’s case.
