Ferries stand idle at Vanino port

The Vladivostok News

Sakhalin Shipping Company lays the blame on the Far Eastern Railway for the ferries standing idle due to their untimely delivery of freight cars, www.Sakhalin.com reported.

As of October 27, out of 690 freight cars on Russian railroads destined for the island of Sakhalin, over a half of them, 412, are on the Far Eastern Railway, including 312 on the Komsomolsky line connected to the ferry station. However, only 50 of them are at the Vanino ferry station in the Khabarovsky region ready to be shipped to the island.

Despite the ship company’s written warnings and applications to the railroad administration, the situation has remained the same for the past several days, the site said. The number of freight cars on the Komsomolsky line is increasing, as well as that of freight cars at the near-ferry stations.

Meanwhile, each of the four ferries working on the route to Sakhalin are able to transport up to 24-26 carriages in one passage.

Overall, since the beginning of October, the plan for transporting freight cars remains 10 percent incomplete. To avoid the idleness of ships due to lack of freight cars, Sakhalin Shipping Company must economize their schedule and increase the time of each passage, the site said.
