Divers under fire

The Vladivostok News

Nakhodka’s Prosecutor’s Office launched on Tuesday a criminal case against a man who halted divers’ work in one of the town’s bays by threatening them with a gun, a press statement from their office said.

The incident occurred at Spokoynaya Bay, when an unidentified person opened fire in the direction of the divers who were exploring the bay’s marine resources for a local fishery plant.

The man introduced himself as a bodyguard representing the interests of the private citizen and demanded that the divers stop all work in the bay. The divers showed the man all permissive documents but the man refused to be convinced and threatened to open fire if the divers continued working.

The diving team was forced to leave the bay. The fishing plant filed a complaint with the local prosecutor estimating its damages at 50,780 rubles ($1,908).

The preliminary investigation is being held by Nakhodka’s prosecutor’s office, which hopes to uncover the man’s motive for the attack. Currently the man is charged with an attempted assault with a lethal weapon.
