Sky’s falling at construction site

Combined reports

A steel beam fell in dangerous proximity to a young man on Tuesday when he was passing by the construction site of the multi-level parking lot in downtown Vladivostok, opposite the building of the city’s administration. This has been the fourth incident which has occurred at the site since September. Luckily enough, the student did not receive any serious injuries.

The incident happened at about 9 a.m. Tuesday when the student of the Far Eastern National University was passing by the site. The young man whose name was not revealed, was hospitalized, Primorye television cited the central Vladivostok ambulance department as stating. Doctors said the student was later taken home.

Primorye’s Prosecutor Office has launched an investigation into the incident Prima Media news agency cited the office specialists as saying. During the ten-day inspection, the prosecutors will determine the responsibility of the people in charge of safety regulation on the site.

“Considering the inspection results, the prosecutors will decide on whether or not to suspend construction work until the safety violations are eliminated,” prosecutors said.

Preceding the incident with the young man, on November 9, part of a construction item fell down damaging a temporary pedestrian crossway. Fortunately, no one was hurt. On November 3, about two cubic meters of liquid cement poured down from the site onto a parked car burying it under the cement flow. Again, luckily, no passer-bys were injured.

In mid September, the heeling jib of a construction crane used at the site paralyzed traffic in the city’s downtown and caused the evacuation of 726 people from neighboring buildings. Later, the jib was secured and dismantled, but the traffic remained clogged in the adjoining streets for several days.
