Vladivostok by Braille Raymond was not here

In the ‘obshchezhite’ I live in, the Russian and international students do not live together. The second, third and sixth floors accommodate foreign students, the rest are inhabited by Russian students. Let me tell you this week about a guy in my dormitory named Raymond whose name was always around, but whom no one had ever seen.

Social life Mosque and chapel to preach tolerance

The mosque and its adjoining minaret in NakhodkaIn late October, Primorye’s town of Nakhodka saw the opening of the region’s first Muslim mosque, located in the town’s most visible place on the Lebedinaya sopka. Meanwhile, on the opposite side this small hill, the construction of an orthodox chapel has begun, with the architectural ensemble of the two buildings aimed to symbolize tolerance and reconciliation between Christians and Muslims.

Arts and Ideas South Korean guards honored in Vladivostok

On Wednesday in the conference hall of the Vladivostok newspaper Primorye painter Vladlen Kamovsky personally presented his 16-meter-long painting ‘Vladivostok’ to South Korean marine guards who rescued 11 Russian sailors from a sunken ship Sinegorye in October.

Environment Amur needs UN clean-up aid

The United Nations may allocate $7 million within a UN Environment Programme (UNEP) budget for an ecological preserve on the Amur River, Alexei Makhinov, second in charge of the Institute for Water and Ecological Problems of the Far Eastern Branch of Russia’s Academy of Sciences was cited by news reports as saying Wednesday.

Crime watch Gamov’s killers found guilty

On November 17, four and a half years after the deadly attack, three men faced a Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk court and were declared guilty of an arson which claimed the life of a border guard, Major General Vitaly Gamov.

Business Aeroflot spreads wings for merger

The Russian airline Aeroflot recently announced high-flying plans to absorb two Far Eastern airlines –Dalavia and Sakhalin Airlines – in an effort to create a unified airline to operate in the Russian Far East. Vladivostok-based Vladavia did not express any intention to be involved in the merger.

Crime watch Customs uproots smuggled flowers

A large batch of contraband flowers from China were detained by Far Eastern Customs at a border checkpoint in southern Primorye, a press release from the customs reported Monday.
