Business Japan, Russia to speed up connections

Japan’s second largest telecommunication operator KDDI Corporation signed on Tuesday a contract worth $42.7 million with Russia’s Rostelecom to lay an underwater high-speed fiber optic line between the cities of Joetsu and Nakhodka in southern Primorye aiming to improve telecommunication services.

Two blonde English-speaking girls in a Russian bar usually do not go unnoticed. My friend and I experienced this firsthand last Friday. As we were having some drinks in a bar, soon we found ourselves surrounded by Russians asking for our attention. Sorry mom, I broke the do-not-talk-to-strangers-rule.

The court of Dalnegorsk on Wednesday ruled to disband the city’s election commission for its failure to handle local Mayoral Office elections effectively in mid October when one of the running candidates was killed in an apparent contract hit.

A Land Cruiser Prado off-roader belonging to a businessman running a number of markets in the town of Artyom, 50 kilometers from Vladivostok and Nadazhdinsky County, was blasted to pieces on December 8, as a warning, prosecutors said.

The flag of Russia’s former Siberian Flotilla, now a historic item once belonging to one of the Flotilla’s ships and then kept in the U.S. for 83 years, was delivered to the Pacific Fleet Museum in Vladivostok on Wednesday.

Three North Korean nationals were severely beaten by unknown attackers in Vladivostok on Sunday evening, two of the victims later died at the hospital.

The draft of Vladivostok’s 2007 budget presented by the city’s officials at public hearings on December 8, estimates revenues at 5.6 billion rubles ($215.6 million) while expenditures are expected to reach 6.08 billion rubles ($234 million).
