4 geologists crushed by collapsing soil

The Vladivostok News

Rescuers extracted all of the bodies of the four geologists killed by a fallen soil bed at an iron ore deposit in the Jewish Autonomous Region on Tuesday, a press statement from the Far Eastern Department for Emergency Situations reported.

The incident occurred at the Kimkano-Suntarskoye deposit, near the town of Obluchye, when a four-ton bed of soil collapsed, killing the four geologists on the spot. The geologists were conducting soil research in a four-meter deep trench when the collapse occurred. The first two bodies were dragged out by rescuers on Tuesday, the statement said.

The victims, who are currently being identified, were workers at the Kimkano-Suntarsky mining and processing plant.

According to a preliminary investigation, the incident allegedly resulted from soil shifting and underground water, the statement said.
