Special reports To Beijing by rail

The journey is the destination. This is a statement which has followed me through years of traveling. How often we find that it is the movement towards a place, not the place itself, which folds into our hands the most poignant experiences. In taking a trip by rail from the Russian city of Vladivostok to the Chinese city of Beijing, I found this to be especially applicable.

A guard on watch opened fire and killed a soldier from his detachment in the Primorye town of Pogranichny after the soldier did not respond to a command to stop, military prosecutors said Thursday.

Crime watch 2 Primorye journalists attacked, one dead

Two journalists were attacked in separate cases in the Primorye cities of Vladivostok and Partizansk on January 19 and January 20, one of the attacks becoming fatal. Vladivostok police have managed to detain three suspects in the murder case.

Special reports Amur tiger killed in bus accident

A bus carrying passengers from the Primorye city of Dalnegorsk to the city of Khabarovsk hit an endangered Amur tiger on the road killing the animal on the spot. The bus swerved off the road into a ditch, injuring one passenger.

Crime watch Primorye mobster arrested for extortion

A known Primorye businessman Yuri Trifonov, who is allegedly related to local crime bosses, was arrested on January 19 right in the court hall of the Soviet District court in Vladivostok on charges of extortion. Another two of his accomplices were also put under arrest following the prosecutor’s request.

Court hearings of the case launched against an American national Christopher Garner began in the Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk on January 19. Garner is facing murder charges.

Business Amur Minerals strikes it big

The Amur Minerals Corporation operating out of the Russian Far East recently reported on a steep increase in the total worth of their mineral deposits, as confirmed by the independent firm SRK Consulting. This reexamination has led to a 43 percent increase in the value of the company, now at $90-$110 million.
