Opinion Love the snow, hate the ice

I was born and raised in Alaska, and the thought of snow sweeps in childhood memories such as ski lifts, snowmen, and warm winter lodges. After this last week’s extreme snowfall in Vladivostok, occurring near the end of an unseasonably temperate winter, my mind turns instead to the climactic phenomena surrounding global warming and the problems of properly clearing or de-icing Vladivostok’s streets.

Environment 3 orphaned bear cubs enjoy home life

Forestry officer for Krasnoarmeysky County in northern Primorye Nikolai Bliznetsov on Tuesday received an anonymous call from a local resident who reported about three bear cubs freezing in a box left near the bus station of Novopokrovka village. Bliznetsov rushed to the bus terminal and took the little bears to his home. He told the Vladivostok newspaper reporter that the cubs are the size of a mitten and should be no older than one and a half months.

Business Primorye tourism spreads wings

In 2006 Primorye’s tourist industry landed with 7.5 billion rubles ($282 million) on the regional budget demonstrating a 1.8 billion rubles increase if compared to the previous year, officials reported.

Environment Far Eastern leopards to be tracked

Russian and Chinese ecologists announced plans to carry out a cooperative census of Amur leopards from Feb. 1 until Feb. 15, however a heavy snowfall which occurred Tuesday in the Primorye territory postponed the start for a few days.

Crime watch Murders on rise in Vladivostok

Director of the construction company Farkon Pyotr Pervukhin and his wife were found dead with signs of violence on Tuesday in Vladivostok in their Penthouse apartment at the Corona hotel which they owned.

A resident of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk may face a $2,000 fine for selling unlicensed software of the Microsoft Corporation, local prosecutor’s office reported on Tuesday. The case is reported a day after a global piracy watchdog said Monday in a report that Russia is the "worst offender" against intellectual property rights after China.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Russky Island, located several kilometers off the Pacific port of Vladivostok an ideal place for Russia to host the 2012 APEC and promised to allot a $3.8 billion federal investment to turn the territory into a gorgeous sea resort.
