3 orphaned bear cubs enjoy home life

by Tatyana Grigoriyeva

Forestry officer for Krasnoarmeysky County in northern Primorye Nikolai Bliznetsov on Tuesday received an anonymous call from a local resident who reported about three bear cubs freezing in a box left near the bus station of Novopokrovka village. Bliznetsov rushed to the bus terminal and took the little bears to his home. He told the Vladivostok newspaper reporter that the cubs are the size of a mitten and should be no older than one and a half months.

Deputy Head of Vladivostok Hunters Inspection Roman Luzhny commented that, the cubs were not orphaned due to poaching. “In Krasnoarmeysky county wood logging activities are very intensive and wood cutters might find the orphaned cubs and take them to the bus stop. It is not known what might have happened to their mom,” Luzhny said.

Bliznetsov is currently feeding the cubs with nutritional milk substitute and arranging a future for them in one of the rehabilitation centers for wild animals in the Khabarovsky region. The cubs will be taken to the center as soon as they get strong enough to survive the trip.
