A heavy snowstorm hit Vladivostok on Wednesday carpeting the city in white with 47 centimeters of snow, which is a three-month norm. The gusts of wind reached 23 meters per second. The cyclone, which brought much precipitation in Primorye, paralyzed the city’s traffic and halted operations at Vladivostok airport for more than 24 hours. In some residential districts power transmission lines were damaged by the snowfall and about 30,000 Primorye residents suffered an absence of electricity.

Two truly Russian events hit this week in Vladivostok. One a cause for dismay, and the other a cause for celebration. Both however lie at the root of Russian culture, and its modern day connections to a deep and ancient past.

Governor announces current plansPrimorye’s Governor Sergei Darkin held a regular press conference on Wednesday praising the APEC-2012 projects and President Vladimir Putin’s intentions to turn the Russian Far East into a blossoming territory. Darkin told reporters that the construction of the bridge over Zolotoi Rog Bay is planned to be started this year and will soon be followed by construction of another bridge to the Russky Island. Another huge project to start this year is connected with the building of an oil pipeline to stretch from Taishet in Siberia to Kozmino Bay in Primorye. Construction works in Kozmino are to be launched this April, Darkin said.

Experiencing the joys and falls of a skiing competition, Primorye sport enthusiasts take to the trails in the annual cross-country ski race in the town of Spassk-Dalny on Sunday. The national sporting event called Lyzhnya Rossie, or Ski-track of Russia, was held in more than 80 cities throughout Russia, with 3,500 racers gliding into the Primorye towns of Spassk and Arseniyev. The winners of each local division will compete on February 21 at the national race in the city of Sochi, a city which hopes to host the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics.

Vladivostok marriage registration offices plan to open their doors for all full of love and a desire to tie the knot this Wednesday, making an exception to their usual Friday-Sunday work schedule for the sake of the world’s beloved holiday of St. Valentine’s.
