Governor announces current plans

Primorye’s Governor Sergei Darkin held a regular press conference on Wednesday praising the APEC-2012 projects and President Vladimir Putin’s intentions to turn the Russian Far East into a blossoming territory. Darkin told reporters that the construction of the bridge over Zolotoi Rog Bay is planned to be started this year and will soon be followed by construction of another bridge to the Russky Island. Another huge project to start this year is connected with the building of an oil pipeline to stretch from Taishet in Siberia to Kozmino Bay in Primorye. Construction works in Kozmino are to be launched this April, Darkin said.

Federal prosecutors investigate Primorye

More than 40 officials from Russia’s General Prosecutor’s Office arrived in Vladivostok Monday to inspect the work of local law-enforcement bodies. For two weeks the commission plans to examine the investigation of criminal cases by Primorye’s Prosecutor Office. The officials’ mass landing in Vladivostok straightly follows last week’s visit of Russia’s Chief Prosecutor Yuri Chaika, who blasted the Far Eastern prosecutors for almost a 30 percent growth in the crime rate in Russia’s remotest district. Officials keep mum about possible reshuffles. At the same time head of Primorye’s Federal Security Office Yuri Alyoshin was reported to resign from his post and Alexander Vyatkin, ex-head of the Tumen region’s branch of Russia’s Federal Security Service, will replace him, news reports said Wednesday.

Bridge thieves arrested

Three residents of Primorye’s village of Zavodskoy located near the town of Artyom dismantled a metal bridge over the local river Sovkhoznaya aiming to profit from selling its parts to a metal scrap collecting service. The inventive men were detained by police directly at the scrap service whose workers called for assistance. The detained men are facing criminal charges. The bridge was constructed on request from locals residing in a village of Yasnoye across the river, with Artyom’s administration allotting 422,000 rubles ($16,000). The repair works will take several months during which the villagers will have to suffer absence of any connection with the town.
