Primorye population shrinks

The Vladivostok News

The total of Primorye’s population has decreased by 13.7 percent in the past year, a statement from the region’s Department for Statistics has reported.

According to the statement, as of January 1, 2007, the number of Primorye’s residents amounted to 2.006 million people.

This reduction in Primorye’s population in 2006 was caused both by natural population loss (67.3 percent) and outflow from the region. In comparison with 2005, the overall death rate decreased by 20.6 percent.

In 2006, the number of people arriving in Primorye accounted for 26,402 people as opposed to 30,897 people having left the region. The disparity between the influx and outflow has decreased 2.4 percent if compared to the year of 2005.

The rate of infant mortality has decreased to 11 deaths per 1,000 births as compared to 13 per 1,000 in 2005. Overall, 20,927 children were born last year.

The last year also showed a 4.7 percent increase in the number of marriages, with 16,780 marriages registered in 2006.
