Russian ship in distress near Kuril Islands

Two vessels are heading to help to the Russian refrigerator vessel which is in distress off the Kuril Islands, news reports said Friday.

The ship ‘Yonk Tung’ with 11 people on board sent a distress signal on Friday morning, a press statement from Russia’s Far Eastern Department for Emergency Situations reported.

Currently, the vessel is afloat between the islands of Iturup and Kunashir in the strait of St. Yekaterina. According to the captain, the ship has taken a large heel, with its engine disabled, the statement said.

The weather on the site is reported as adverse, with waves reaching three meters in height and wind reaching 20 meters per second.

The ship’s home port is Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the statement reported.
