Russians value women’s holiday

The Vladivostok News

The majority of Russians, 92 percent of women and 80 percent of men, enjoy celebrating the International Women’s Day on March 8 and consider it a true holiday, a recent opinion poll held by the VTsIOM agency revealed.

The survey was conducted among 1,600 people in Russia’s 153 cities, towns and villages on the verge of the holiday and has a margin error of 3.4 percent, a statement on VTsIOM official site reported Monday.

Almost half of Russian men, 47 percent of the respondents, intend to present women with flowers while 31 percent of the polled may choose to please women with sweets. 33 percent of the interviewed people consider souvenirs, cards and other small items to be suitable gifts for Women’s Day. 25 percent of the people polled intend to present perfumes, make-up and imitation jewelry while 14 percent consider soft toys to be nice and lovely presents.

More expensive presents are a rarer treat for the women’s day – only 5 percent of people polled would think of buying jewelry, fashion clothes or household appliances to ease women’s labor about the house. 7 percent of the interviewed did not demonstrate inventive impulses and said they would give money while 11 percent simply stated they would not present women with anything.

Almost half of the people polled, 49 percent, plan to celebrate the holiday at home enjoying a home-made feast while 17 percent intend to visit their friends and stay there for the celebration. Only 4 percent dream of going out to a restaurant, a disco or a night club to have fun on Women’s Day. 8 percent of the interviewed said they did not plan any celebrations.
