Six mountain climbers from Kamchatka and Primorye will embark on an expedition to Mount Everest to ascend the world's highest peak, the first project of the kind organized by climbers from the Russian Far East.

The ascent team, which consists of four residents of Kamchatka and two from Primorye, will depart from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the city of Moscow next week destining then for Kathmandu, Nepal on April 1 to begin their climb, the project’s site http://everest.kytx.ru said.

According to Alexander Bichenko, the group leader and president of the Kamchatka-based climbing club Kutkh, the expedition is expected to take two months.

The project aims to contribute to the region’s sport and social life, Bichenko said.

In February, the group ascended the Kamen Mountain in Kamchatka as part the training leg for the expedition to Mount Everest.

Since 1953, when Mount Everest was first climbed, about 2,200 climbers have successfully ascended the mountain, and 186 climbers have died attempting to reach the summit.
