Kamchatka deputies target poaching boats

The Vladivostok News

Seventeen poachers’ vessels detained by Kamchatka’s border guards are currently remain under seizure in the Avachinsky Bay of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky creating a headache for local officials who are forced to take care of them until the court decision on each case is made.

The ships, most of which fly foreign flags but employ Russian crews, were apprehended for poaching marine resources, members of Kamchatka’s committee for fishing and fleet reported at their meeting Wednesday.

According to the officials, holding the poacher’s vessels in Avachinsky Bay has many difficulties including the absence of any particular place to dock the impounded boats and the necessity to guard them during lengthy periods of time until the court verdicts come on hand, local newspaper The Vecherniye Vesti Petropavlovska reported.

The meeting participants suggested removing the seized vessels to a paid dockyard in the Bay of Babiya to prevent possible ecological problems in Avachinsky Bay. In case that the vessels’ owners refuse to take their boats to the paid dock, the boats might be confiscated and auctioned.
