September 27, 2007Man survives bear hugA 46-year-old resident of Kamchatka was attacked by a bear near a local river but managed to survive the deadly meeting.
The bear attacked the man near the Shanuch river, 170 kilometers from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and gnawed the victim’s shoulders, back and legs, police of Kamchatsky region reported Thursday. The man managed to flee the enraged animal. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. The Kamchatsky brown bear is one of the largest bears in the world. The weight of an adult can reach 700 kilograms (1,540 pounds) and the height is normally around 3 meters. On Kamchatka peninsula some 16,000 brown bears reside. Annually 2 to 3 cases of bear attacks on people are registered.
