Dalnegorsk elections make first round safe

The Vladivostok News

Two of seven candidates for Dalnegorsk’s Mayoral position, both ambitious businessmen, made it into the second round on Sunday with no casualties reported. Exactly a year ago, Dalnegorsk Mayoral elections were halted after one of the running candidates for the post was gunned down near his office three days prior the elections.

Dalnegorsk, a town some 500 kilometers north of Vladivostok, gained a wicked reputation in October 2006 when during the second stage of the mayoral race one of the candidates Dmitry Fotyanov was slaughtered. Elections were cancelled and an investigation was launched.

This Sunday Dalnegorsk made another attempt to elect a mayor. None of the seven candidates collected more than 50 percent of the vote to become an absolute winner for the position, therefore the two leaders of the votes will compete in the second round, election officials said.

Head of the mining company Dalpolimetall Grigory Krutikov and Alexander Terebilov, director of Azalia Company gathered most of the votes and will be rivals in the second round of elections planned for October 21.

“According to the election results, Krutikov collected 29.5 percent of the vote and Terebilov came second with 22.8 percent,” head of Dalnegorsk election committee Natalia Brovchenko said. According to Brovchenko, 40 percent of Dalnegorsk voters cast their ballots on Sunday making the elections legitimate.

The father of last year’s killed candidate, Vladimir Fotyanov, who decided to participate in the current elections managed to collect some 4.5 percent of the votes.
