Police bigwig arrested for abuse of power

The Vladivostok News

Acting deputy head for Primorye Police in charge of economic security issues Anatoly Latsepov was arrested on Tuesday following a ruling by the Leninsky district court of Vladivostok regarding charges of abuse of position, prosecutors said.

Investigators revealed that this July Latsepov issued an unlawful order to stop investigation into the case of an enterprise which had not paid taxes amounting to 22 million rubles. The investigators said that by doing this Latsepov concealed the criminal actions of the organization.

The prosecutors protested Latsepov’s ruling regarding the organization and opened a criminal case against the organization on charges of tax underpayment. They also opened a case against Latsepov on charges of abuse of position, a press statement from Primorye’s prosecutors’ office said Tuesday.

In August Latsepov was temporarily relieved of his position for the duration of the investigation. Latsepov started to meet with witnesses in his case, who complained to prosecutors that he was exerting pressure. On Thursday the Leninsky court ruled to put Latsepov under arrest in order that he would not hamper further investigation.
