Cyclone brings electricity, water cut-offs

The Vladivostok News

A cyclone hit Primorye on October 19 covering the region’s cities and towns with a two-month norm of snow which caused numerous cut-offs of electricity and water. As of Monday, over 70 Primorye towns, villages and settlements still remained in the dark.

The stormy wind tore down electricity transmission lines in many places and the residents of Vladivostok were left without electricity late Friday and early Saturday. Several residential districts were left without cold water supplies as well.

An emergency situation after the cyclone was also announced in three of Primorye’s counties – Mikhailovsky, Khorolsky and Ussurisky, a press statement from the Far Eastern Department of Russia’s Ministry for Emergency Situations said. Some 70 villages and settlements still wait for electricity lines to be fixed.

Vladivostok airport had to stop its operations for 12 hours. The cyclone also led to numerous traffic jams on the region’s roads, with cars caught in a snow grid.

On Monday, the snow in Vladivostok started to melt with the daily temperature forecast to reach +7 degrees Celsius.
