False hostage report prompts rescue operation

Policemen and a special forces group were set into action in Primorye’s town of Nakhodka early Wednesday after a drunk man called the police reporting a mass hostage situation, news reports cited a statement from Nakhodka’s Department of Inner Affairs.

The 40-year-old resident of Nakhodka, whose name has not been released, told the police his surname and address saying he was holding a total of 15 people hostage in the towns of Nakhodka and Partizansk and the settlement of Vladimiro-Aleksandrovskoye.

The man demanded a helicopter and one million rubles ($40,000), the statement said. During the operation, no hostages were found. The man was intoxicated when detained.

Along with the police, the operation also involved federal security officers. An investigation has been launched into the incident, the statement said.
