Russian, Philippine sailors rescued in Yellow Sea

Combined reports

South Korean patrol ships have rescued 11 Russian and three Philippine sailors in the Yellow Sea from a bulk carrier traveling from south China to Vladivostok, on October 18, a press statement from Vladivostok’s Marine Rescue center said.

The Almira J, sailing under a Georgian flag with its home port of Batumi, sent a distress signal around Thursday evening when water started to flood its engine-room and the engines stopped.

Vladivostok’s Marine Rescue Center passed information about the ship in distress to S. Korean sea rescuers, and two patrol ships promptly arrived to evacuate the sailors from the vessel.

All rescued sailors are currently on board the S. Korean ships heading to a S. Korean port. Their conditions are reported as normal, though some still feel the consequences of the stressful situation, the statement said.

The ship was carrying automobile cargo, www.seanews.ru said. Currently, the rescue center in the S. Korean port of Mokpo is considering towing the sinking vessel to the port.

The cause of the accident is yet to be determined.
