Rail company announces front-runners

The Vladivostok and Omsk railway stations were named best in Russia for the third quarter of 2007, railway officials said Wednesday.

Russian Railways selected the best stations, regional railways and its branches evaluating production and financial and economic results, as well as provision of traffic safety and protection of labor.

The Far Eastern and Moscow Railways were ranked best in Russia for the period from July to October, the statement from the company said. More than 180 companies operating within Russian Railways in the country’s regions were picked out at the contest.

Among the railway branches, the company’s choice went to Vladivostok’s branch of the Far Eastern Railway, the Volkhovstroyevsk branch of Oktyabrsk Railway, the Kartalinsk branch of Yuzhno-Ural Railway and the Omsk and Ulan-Ude branches of Western- and Eastern-Siberian Railways respectively.

The staffs of Novy Port of Oktyabrsk Railway and Uzlovaya-1 of Moscow Railway in western Russia were nominated the best across Russia. The staffs working for stations at Gorky and North Caucasus Railways as well as South-Eastern, Sverdlovsk and South-Ural Railways also received high praise from Russian Railways.

The winners will receive certificates and prizes from Russian Railways, the statement said.

Last year, the Far Eastern Railway, which has a length of about 6,000 kilometers (about 3,700 miles), had a passenger traffic flow totaling 28 million people and cargo volumes amounting to 49 million tons.
