Special reports Khabarovsk residents banned to flee before elections

The Khabarovsk Department of Migration recently issued a decree prohibiting the region’s residents from leaving the territory from November 29 through December 1, the three days preceding the upcoming elections to the State Duma. Khabarovsk’s Prosecutors Office has filed a protest against the order on the grounds that it is unconstitutional.

Social life Polls reveal predictable election results

According to three major polling agencies in Russia, about 65 percent of voters may cast their ballots in support of United Russia in the elections for the State Duma on December 2, with a predicted turnout of 60-74 percent.

Environment German children draw attention to Amur leopard

More than 3,000 drawings of the Amur leopard residing in the Far East of Russia were submitted by German children this year to the World Wildlife Fund’s branch in Berlin working with Russian projects to raise concern for preserving the big cats. The best paintings were brought to Vladivostok to join the works of Russian and Chinese children.

Crime watch Traffic murder case to be appealed again

Vladivostok’s Prosecutor’s Office has announced plans to appeal the sentencing verdict against an Azerbaijan native who shot dead a Vladivostok man in a quarrel over the traffic incident in October 2006 after the man uttered insulting words into his address. The convicted man was first sentenced to seven years in prison but his lawyers appealed the ruling and he finally received a three-year suspended sentence.

13.7 trillion rubles ($560 billion) will be invested in the construction of new railways in four Russian regions through the year 2030, though two of the remotest Far Eastern territories – Chukotka and Kamchatka – will remain unreachable by train.

Thirty five crewmembers and passengers were saved from the bulk carrier Kastor-1 which sank in stormy waters of the Sea of Japan on Sunday, while rescue operation for one missing person still continues, emergency officials reported.
