Primorye stumbles over unemployment

The Vladivostok News

A total of 76,500 people are currently listed as unemployed in Primorye, which accounts for 7.2 percent of the region’s population, a statement from the regional Department for Statistics reported.

Of those unemployed, only 33.4 percent are officially registered with job placement agencies, the statement said.

For the period from this January through September, 72,500 Primorye residents registered at unemployment agencies, with 39 percent of those previously not involved in labor activities, 25 percent employed, 21 percent students aiming to work in their spare time, and 4.7 percent being pensioners.

Of those who applied for registration, 47 percent are aged from 14-29, the statement said.

Over 43,000 residents who contacted placement services, or 60 percent, were provided jobs, with 17,000 finding work according to their specialty. Of those employed, 20,000 had no previous job experience, while 1,300 were pensioners.

In the same time period, the number of those unemployed for more than four months was 43 percent, while the number of those who had been unemployed for over a year was 19 percent.

According to statistics, the average job search time for an unemployed person in the region by the end of September accounted for 6.7 months, with rural area residents having considerably more difficulties in finding work than those residing in urban areas.

As of late September, the demand for employees at Primorye’s organizations and companies numbered 23,000 people, the statement said.
