December 06, 2007Tiny town stays powerlessSome 2,642 residents of Severo-Kurilsk, Kuril Islands, still remain without electricity, four days after a breakdown at the local current generators occurred, news reports said.
The town, located on Paramushir Island, was de-energized on Monday, when the two generators which provide it with electric power broke down. The energy supply will be restored not earlier than Friday evening, Severo-Kurilsky county’s vice-mayor Nail Gizatulin said, Ria Novosti reported. Currently, unfavorable weather conditions prevent delivery of spare parts for the broken generators from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Gizatulin said. According to him, the helicopter cannot take off due to a snowstorm. “If the weather conditions do not improve, the parts will be delivered by ship, which in this case will take a day,” he said. Currently, all social and cultural objects in the town – the hospital, kindergarten, school, communication and television stations, seismology center and six fish processing plants - are operating from emergency diesel generators. “For our city, the situation which occurred is not extraordinary. For cooking food, all the town residents have gas-stoves,” the vice-mayor was quoted as saying. According to him, the residents have heat and water in their homes. No state of emergency has been declared in the town, a press statement from Sakhalin’s Department for Emergency Situation said. Supposedly, the breakdown occurred due to low quality diesel fuel used to operate the generators, the news reports speculated. The county’s Prosecutor’s office has started an inspection into the incident to assess the actions of those who might be responsible for the case.
