Environment Leopard population threatened by illegal logging

A recent inspection of a state nature reserve in southern Primorye, the habitat of the Far Eastern leopard, has revealed illegal forest cuttings which put the already dwindling population of the world’s rarest wild cat at a greater risk of extinction.

A total of 26.5 billion rubles ($1.07 billion) will be allotted into improving Primorye’s transport infrastructure as part of a federal program to develop the Far Eastern and Zabaikalye territories, a press statement from the regional administration said Monday.

Russia's Primorye Shipping Company (PRISCO) will construct a series of advanced tank ships able to endure low temperatures in accordance with a contract with a S. Korean shipyard, a press statement from the company said December 14.
