January 09, 2008Food price hike forecastedFood prices in Russia may jump 10-percent in February when food producers and traders will be free from an obligation to hold back prices for the so called ‘social products’ like milk, bread and butter.
The Ministry of Economic Development has already prepared an anti-inflation plan but it is unclear if the plan will be able to wrestle with the expected rise in prices, Izvestia newspaper recently reported. Meanwhile Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested increasing wages for state workers by 14 percent starting February 1. Retired residents may count on an 8-percent increase in pensions and military men will see an 18-percent hike in salaries. Though the government may try to hold back inflation before the presidential elections this March, after the elections Russians will have to tighten up their budgets and follow a more fitting diet.
