Combined reports

The Russian vessel Atlant and Japanese boats have resumed the search for two sailors who went missing in a storm near Kurils on Monday, news reports said.

Leonid Korzin fell overboard the Atlant some 40 miles off the island of Urup at 6.30 p.m. local time. Another sailor, mechanic Viktor Kobychev, leaped into the water attempting to rescue Korzin, a statement from Sakhalin’s Department for Emergency Situations said.

The search for the two began immediately, yet brought no results on Tuesday and had to be resumed Wednesday. Along with Atlant, two Japanese fishing boats are involved in the search, with the captains of Russian and Japanese vessels in the area having received word of the rescue operation.

As of Tuesday, the wind in the distress area reached from 18 to 20 meters per second, with waves peaking at a height of four meters, a representative of Sakhalin’s fleet monitoring service said, according to Ria Novosti news agency.
