January 31, 2008Primorye to build up new cargo terminalsFive large cargo container terminals are planned to be built in Primorye to develop its transport sector and make the region a major international logistics center in the Pacific Rim, a statement from the regional administration reported Tuesday.
According to the statement, the terminals will be located in southern Primorye, the most favorable territory in terms of enhancing the region’s logistics system, and will aim to expand the region’s economy by attracting more cargo, to progress the evolution of marine infrastructure and offer additional jobs. A major logistics complex will be constructed at the settlement of Novy, located near the TransSiberian railway and in proximity to the ports of Vladivostok, Nakhodka and Vostochny, in order to ensure the regularity of sea and railway transport. The cargo container terminal and logistics center in the port of Vostochny will bring about the development of the region’s railway and vehicle transport systems. The marine cargo handling complex ‘Troitsa’ to be constructed at the settlement of Zarubino, Khasansky County is aimed to assist the implementation of the international transport route Primorye-2. The project of building new wharfs in the container terminal at the port of Vostochny near the city of Nakhodka is planned to strengthen the port’s potential as a large transit center and increase exports and imports. Finally, the plans for developing the region’s transport sector include increasing the capacity of Vladivostok’s Marine Commercial Port in terms of large container transshipment. Currently, the transport department of Primorye’s administration is considering the best possible variants for the terminals’ construction, the statement said. Today, Primorye’s container turnover amounts to 400,000 containers per year. According to the region’s Governor Sergei Darkin, the figure should reach some 2 million containers by the year 2012.
