St. Valentine’s Day loved in Russia

Although St. Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14, is considered to be a catholic holiday, half of Russians intend to celebrate this day designated for all those in love.

According to a survey conducted by a Russian polling agency VTsIOM, 48 percent of the interviewed people said they consider St. Valentine’s Day a holiday and plan to do something special. The number of people wholeheartedly devoted to the holiday is naturally the highest among the 18-24 age group – 81 percent of them intend to spend the day immersed in love and presents.

28 percent of the polled people plan to give lovely gifts to those whom they adore. 13 percent of those interviewed said they will present flowers while 9 percent of the people said they will buy sweets. 6 percent of those surveyed selected toys, cosmetics or artificial jewelry as their choice to show their love.

48 percent of those who do not consider St. Valentine’s Day a special holiday do not intend to buy anything for other people for the sake of love.

VTsIOM interviewed 1,600 people in 153 Russian cities and towns in January of 2008. The margin of error is 3 percent.
