Ship drifts in Sea of Japan

The Vladivostok News

A ship with 24 Russian crew members is sailing idly in the Sea of Japan waiting for rescuers after its steering wheel broke early on Friday.

The ship Otani, sailing under the Mongolian flag but with a Russian crew, was heading from Vladivostok to Yokohama. After the steering system unexpectedly went out of operation, the crew sent out a signal requesting help.

Vladivostok Marine Rescuers Center has dispatched the vessel Lazurit to aid the disabled ship. Lazurit is expected to rendezvous with the Otani on Friday evening and tow the ship to the port of Slavyanka in southern Primorye.

So far the ship and its crew are safe and favorable weather conditions are expected for the region in which the ship is coasting.
